Stewards charge Lim for reckless riding

PENANG,  Mar 3, 2010

In an unusual twist of event, jockey Lim Hock Kheng, who was earlier suspended six days for careless riding by the stipendiary stewards, has been charged by the racing stewards of the Penang Turf Club (PNTC) for reckless riding and suspended three months.

The racing stewards of the PNTC reviewed the decision of the stipendiary stewards to suspend Lim for six days under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) for careless riding when he rode FORWARD in Race 5 at the PNTC on Jan 4. The racing stewards, after considering all the evidence adduced, substituted the charge to one of reckless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(i).

The details of the charge are that whilst riding the horse FORWARD in the said race, at about the 250m mark, he shifted out when insufficiently clear of EASY GOING, ridden by V. Sivan, causing that horse to clip the heels of FORWARD, stumble and fall thereby dislodging its rider. In so shifting out the horse FORWARD, he showed no regard to the consequence of his action and the risk to others by his riding, and in particular, the danger of injury to other horses and riders.

Lim pleaded guilty to the charge and the racing stewards, taking into consideration the facts of the case, Lim’s mitigation and his previous record, suspended him with immediate effect for three months from today and to expire on Jun 2, both days inclusive.
