Ruzaini suspended 6 months, Osman fined

KUALA LUMPUR:  Oct 10, 2010

Apprentice Ruzaini Supien has been suspended six months for his handling of ASLAN in a Class 3 - 1400m sprint in Ipoh last Sept 26, and trainer Osman Sidek fined RM20,000 on a separate charge.

ASLAN (Encosta De Lago - Mad Desire by Covetous), trained by Osman, flashed home fourth to WINCHESTER WONDER, finishing just over one length from the winner.

The Stewards concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of ASLAN here today. Evidence was taken from Ruzaini in the presence of his master, trainer S Cook, and Osman Sidek. Certified court interpreter, Ms Keng Siew Hong, assisted in this inquiry.

App S Ruzaini pleaded guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge were that:

1. From entering the home straight, he shifted out to race behind BEST OPPORTUNITY when there was an opportunity to obtain a run on either side of that runner; and

2. Once in clear running at about the 300m, he failed to ride with sufficient vigour to the satisfaction of the Stewards till the finish.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into consideration the facts of this case, Ruzaini’s points of mitigation and his clean record. Ruzaini was suspended from riding in races for a period of six months with effect from today till April 10, 2011, both days inclusive. He was advised of his right of appeal.

Trainer Osman pleaded guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 35(1) which states, “Trainers are responsible for ensuring their horses are properly qualified, that they are properly equipped, in a fit condition and properly shod as determined by these Rules when presenting them to race.”

The particulars of the charge is that he presented ASLAN to race in the said race when in evidence during the inquiry, he admitted that the gelding was not fully fit to race and as such he instructed his rider not to “trash him” as it would be better suited over a longer distance.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into consideration the facts of this case, Osman’s points of mitigation and his record. Osman was fined the sum of RM20,000 and was advised of his right of appeal.
