Races cancelled due to strangles case

IPOH:  Aug 19, 2010

Due to a positive strangles case identified at Perak Turf Club (PRTC), the committee of Penang Turf Club has decided, under veterinary advice, to cancel the Penang August Meeting to be held in Ipoh for both weekends (Aug 21 & 22, Aug 28 & 29).

With the Penang main track under upgrading which will take several months, three Penang Turf Club race meetings this year were scheduled to be held in Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur, beginning with the August Meeting.

The Peter Lee-trained CLASSIC SPARKLE (Pacfic Prince - Little Girl by Prince Of Praise) was sent to a spelling station near here on July 31 and nine days later developed a temperature and was sent to the PRTC Equine Hospital.

The Malaysian mare was tested positive for strangles yesterday and a second test done by the Veterinary Research Institute in Ipoh today confirmed the result.

Following this, movement of horses at PRTC are confined to their stables and a nation-wide ban on the movement of horses imposed with immediate effect until further notice.
