Wepner leads championship after upset win

KUALA LUMPUR:  June 18, 2011

HOSS CARTWRIGHT, who fared badly in six starts in Singapore, created a huge upset when he scored first-up in Malaysia in the Australian Bloodstock Agency Trophy (Class 4 - 1400m) at Sungei Besi here today.

In the process, the Irish four-year-old, who was racing after six months spell, gave South African Martin Wepner, champion jockey in Malaysia in 2006, the first day lead in the International Jockeys Championship hosted by the Selangor Turf Club.

Three races in the Championship series were held today. Former MRA and Malaysian champion jockey Benny Woodworth, struck first when he took the first event on GURU GLEE (Kashani - The Gifted Shifta by Defensive Play) in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy (Class 4 - 1800m).

It was the first win in Malaysia for the three-time Singapore winner in eight starts in the country.

New Zealand jockey Jarrod Todd then captured the Kenilworth Cup (Class 3 - 1200m) astride INCOGNITO (Carry The Flag - Amazona by Vain). It was the second start in the country for the former five-time Singapore winner. Todd completed a double when successful on WIND OF SUCCESS (Hurricane Sky - Corporate Success by Success Express) in the Auckland Racing Club Trophy (Restricted Maiden - 1400m).

The came the big shock of the day when HOSS CARTWRIGHT, who had a win and a second in three outings in England before coming out to Singapore, finally his English form to pay RM630 for a win.

Wepner leads the championship with 17 points after he was placed fourth and third in the first two races respectively. The championship concludes with three more events tomorrow.
