Da Cruz fails in appeal but fine reduced

PENANG:  Aug 26, 2011

Brazilian jockey Emerson Da Cruz has failed in his appeal against a 12-month disqualification. However, his fine of RM70,000 was reduced to RM30,000.

Last Aug 26, Da Cruz was disqualified 12 months and fined for his handling of METEOR ONE, trained by Dr Tan Swee Hock, in a Class 4 - 1100m sprint in Penang on Aug 21.

The Dr Tan Swee Hock-trained gelding, ridden by Da Cruz, finished second, beaten only half a length, to HOW YOU SEE.

The Penang Turf Club racing stewards heard his appeal today.

After considering submissions from Da Cruz, who was assisted by a certified interpreter, Ms Marisa Rechenberg, trainer Dr Tan and the chief stipendiary steward, the racing stewards dismissed the appeal against the twelve months disqualification, and reduced his fine to RM30,000. His deposit was refunded. Da Cruz’s disqualification will end on Aug 25, 2012.
