Marzuki disqualified two years

KUALA LUMPUR:  Mar 25, 2011

Jockey Marzuki Sani was today disqualified two years for his handling of AMAZING SURPRISE in a Class 5 - 1400m sprint in Penang last Saturday.

Trained by Jerome Tan, AMAZING SURPRISE (King Cugat - Amistosa by Encosta De Lago) came from a long way back at the homr turn to finish seventh to CIZEN COMMAND.

The Stewards concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of AMAZING SURPRISE at the Selangor Turf Club today. Evidence was taken from Marzuki and Tan, the rider and trainer of AMAZING SURPRISE respectively.

Marzuki was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) in that whilst riding AMAZING SURPRISE in the above race, he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure that AMAZING SURPRISE was given full opportunity of obtaining the best possible placing.

The particulars of the charge were that:

1. From passing the 600m to approximately the 250m mark, he failed to improve his mount when there were opportunities to do so;

2. From approaching the 200m to the finish, he failed to ride his mount with sufficient vigour and determination whilst his mount was running on strongly.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into consideration the facts of this case, Marzuki’s poor record and points of mitigation. After considering the provisions of MRA Rule 44(8)(a), Marzuki was disqualified for a period of two years with immediate effect from March 25 to March 24, both days inclusive. He was advised of his right of appeal.
