Nawawi suspended two months

Apprentice Muhammad Nawawi was today suspended two months for his handling of SAYAPRAYERFORME (Fubu - Rosary Beads by Ashkalani) in a Class 3 - 1200m sprint here last Sunday.

The seven-year-old, ridden by Nawawi, came from a long way back at the home turn to finish joint second to PERFECT PERFORMER.

At the Perak Turf Club today, the Stewards concluded an inquiry into the running and handling of SAYAPRAYERFORME. Evidence was taken from Nawawi in the presence of his master, trainer Tony Yeoh who is also the trainer of SAYAPRAYERFORME.

Nawawi pleaded guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards. The particulars of the charge were that whilst riding SAYAPRAYERFORME in the above race, he failed to improve his position from near the 250m until after passing the 100m when there were opportunities to do so.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into consideration the facts of this case, Nawawi’s guilty plea, his points of mitigation and riding record. Nawawi was suspended from riding in races for a period of two months with effect from July 25 to September 24, both days inclusive. In addition, he was also fined a sum of RM10,000 and was advised of his right of appeal.
