Gary Hind disqualified one year

IPOH:  Jan 11, 2013

English jockey Gary Hind, who rode 12 winners last year and has already landed one win this season from five rides last weekend, has been handed a one-year disqualification and fined RM30,000 for his handling of LIGHTNING ROSE in a Class 5 - 1600m handicap in Ipoh last Saturday.

LIGHTNING ROSE (Brocco - Classy Polly by Sky Classic), a seasoned campaigner with eight wins to her name, came from the rear of the field to finish fifth to WHATEVER WORKS.

The Stewards concluded an inquiry into the above matter on at the Perak Turf Club here today. Evidence was taken from Hind and Kevin Coetzee, the trainer of LIGHTNING ROSE.

After considering all the evidence and reviewing the films, Hind pleaded guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) as read with Rule 44(8)(a) in that whilst riding LIGHTNING ROSE in the above race, he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure that LIGHTNING ROSE was given full opportunity of winning or of obtaining the best possible placing.

The particulars of the charge are that:

1) At the start, he gave insufficient rein to his mount LIGHTNING ROSE, resulting in his mount throwing its head up on two occasions and losing ground;

2) From approximately the 900m to 700m, he failed to make sufficient effort to

improve his position along the inside running rail to race behind FLASH GORDON when there was an opportunity to do so;

3) From approximately the 600m to 450m, he allowed his mount LIGHTNING ROSE to race wide, thereby covering unnecessary ground;

4) From approximately the 200m to the winning post, he failed to ride with sufficient vigour and determination.

When deciding on the penalty, Stewards took into consideration his guilty plea, riding record and the serious nature of the offence. Hind was disqualified for a period of one year with immediate effect from today and to Jan 10, 2014, both dates inclusive. In addition, he was fined the sum of RM30,000 and was advised of his right of appeal.
