Woman trainer Hughes quits local scene

KUALA LUMPUR:  Aug 26, 2013

A year and half after becoming the first woman trainer to win a big race on the local circuit, Katherine Hughes is quitting the local scene.

The Australian, who turned 50 earlier this month, will relinquish her licence on Sep 14.

Hughes, who previously trained in Melbourne and Darwin, was granted a MRA licence in 2010 and in her first season in 2011, saddled seven winners.

In January last year, she made history when she saddled TRIPLE MIGHTY ACE to win the Tunku Gold Cup. She ended the season with 23 winners. She has five wins to her name thus far this season.
