Apprentice Lam disqualified two years

PENANG:  Aug 17, 2013

Up-and-coming apprentice Lam Siew Leong, who is second the apprentice table after booting home 11 winners in his second season on the scene, has been disqualified two years and fined RM50,000 for his handling of WIND OF SUCCESS here last Sunday.

WIND OF SUCCESS, trained by Lam’s master Dr Tan Swee Hock, finished third to MAKEMEAMILLION in a Class 4 - 1100m sprint.

The Stewards concluded an inquiry today at the Penang Turf Club into Lam’s ride on WIND OF SUCCESS in the above race. Further evidence was taken from Lam after Stewards adjourned the inquiry yesterday.

Lam was assisted by Mok Cheng Yoon, a certified court interpreter, Dr Tan Swee Hock and Penang Turf Club medical officer Dr Suaran Singh.

After considering all the evidence and reviewing the videos, Lam was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) as read with Rule 44(8)(a) in that whilst riding WIND OF SUCCESS in the above race, he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure that WIND OF SUCCESS was given full opportunity of winning or of obtaining the best possible placing. The particulars of the charge are that from the 350m to the winning post, he failed to ride with sufficient vigour and determination when a clear run presented itself and when his mount was running on.

When deciding on the penalty, Stewards took into consideration Lam’s riding record under the same rule, the seriousness of the offence and mitigating factors. Lam was disqualified for a period of two years with immediate effect from today to Aug 16, August 2015, both dates inclusive. In addition, he was fined the sum of RM50,000 and advised of his right of appeal.
