Yap suspended four months and fined

PENANG:  Aug 18, 2013

Yap Kin Yin's quest for the jockey's title this season is all but over after he was suspended four months for his handling of HORIZON LAD here last Saturday. He is currently fifth on the table with 17 winners.

Trained by Evelyn Seet, five-year-old HORIZON LAD finished fifth of eight runners to CARBON COPY in a Class 4 - 1600m handicap.

At the conclusion of an inquiry today at the Penang Turf Club, Yap, the rider of HORIZON LAD, pleaded guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride his mount to the satisfaction of the Stewards in that from the 600m to the 300m, he failed to improve his position as instructed on HORIZON LAD when there was an opportunity to do so.

When deciding on the penalty, Stewards took into consideration Yap’s guilty plea, his riding record and mitigating factors. Yap’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of four months with effect from tomorrow to Dec 18, both dates inclusive. In addition, he was fined the sum of RM20,000 and was advised of his right of appeal.
