Jockey Muniandy makes 'home' debut

Muniandy with INFERNO

New Zealand-trained jockey Muniandy Shankar will be making his Malaysian debut in Penang on Sunday. He will be riding in Malaysia for two months during winter down under.

"I have been back to Malaysia on holiday since coming to New Zealand but I have not ridden there,’’ said Muniandy. He will stay with his parents in Penang.

Muniandy, 27, went to New Zealand in 2006 and began riding work for Murray Hamilton at Omakau before taking an apprenticeship with White Robe Lodge co-trainer Brian Anderton six months later.

He is currently the senor rider for White Robe Lodge, a breeding and training establishment which stood two Australasian champion sires, MELLAY and NOBLE BIJOU. It currently stands RAISE THE FLAG, GALLANT GURU and DANZIGHILL.

Muniandy has won 135 races. His best season was 2010-11 with 40 wins as an apprentice. He rode INFERNO (Yamanin Vital - Emerald Fire by Honor Grades) to win the Group 3 Canterbury Gold Cup in 2011 and 2012 for White Robe Lodge. He rode the mare in her 10 wins.

He also had riding experience in New South Wales, Australia, including one ride at Rosehill in Sydney.
