Quechua leads 1-2 for Shaw in Gold Cup

QUECHUA, purchased specially for the Singapore Gold Cup, duly delivered the goods in his first attempt at the $1,350,000 Singapore Group 1 2200m event at Kranji here today.

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Corey Brown settled the Argentinian gelding well up with the pace and he proved too strong for his stablemate EMPEROR'S BANQUET to win by one and a half lengths, giving trainer Patrick Shaw his second 1-2 finish after MR LINE and WAR HORN in 2006.

"This was the big one we've long planned for this horse," said Shaw, who ended the afternoon with four winners. "We spoke to Corey after he drew wide and the plan was to jump well and go forward and that’s exactly how it panned out."

For Brown, it's his biggest win since coming to ride in Singapore. "I’ve won a few Group 2 and Group 3 races here but it’s good to get a Group 1 win off my shoulders and winning the biggest domestic race here is a big thrill for sure," he said.

QUECHUA finished second in both his two runs as a juvenile in Agrentina before starting six more times at three for two wins including the Group 2 Premio Classico Ensayo and three placings which included a third in the Group 1 Gran Premio Miguel Alfredo Martinez de Hoz.

In Singapore, QUECHUA has now raced six times for three consecutive wins and three placings.
