Golden start for champion jockey Shankar

Jai Shankar, who bagged a hat-trick at Penang last Sunday to become the first Malaysian of Indian decent to win the jockey's premiership last season, had a 'golden' start to 2014, winning both his two rides here today.

Shankar, who got his start in 1997 in New Zealand where he rode 20 winners before winning 40 more races in Australia before returning home, partnered GOLDEN PARTNER, a horse he has tasted success on last October, to victory in the Paddy Museum Handicap.

GOLDEN HANDSHAKE, who failed to win a race last year and has finished down the field all season, bounced back to form in style to win the Pekan Rabu Handicap. Despite the gelding's poor recent form, the four-year-old started favourite.

This being the start of the 2014 season and Visit Malaysia Year, the Perak Turf Club named all its races after renowned tourism spots in the country.

There was also a winning start to the new season for Richard Lines, who has won the trainer's titles for the last three years, when he saddled COBRADOR to victory in the A'Famosa Handicap.
