Jockey Cheng disqualified 12 months

SINGAPORE:  Aug 7, 2015

Jockey Cheng Han Kok, 32, was yesterday disqualified for 12 months for an incident in the parade ring at the Kranji racecourse last Jun 28.

At the conclusion of an inquiry on Wednesday, Cheng, a Malaysian, was found guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 152(3)(A) in that he, as a licensed Jockey, provided information to a third party about various horses and their chances which, in the opinion of the Stewards, is prejudicial to integrity and / or good reputation of horse racing in Singapore.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into account the nature of the charge and his record. Cheng was disqualified for a period of twelve months with immediate effect from Wednesday, Aug 5 to Aug 4, 2016, both dates inclusive. He was advised of his right of appeal.

Yesterday, Cheng exercised his right of appeal against the decision of the Panel of Stewards and the penalty imposed on him. He subsequently applied for a stay of sentence.

After hearing and considering submissions from Cheng today, his application for a stay of sentence was denied by the Panel of Stewards.

The appeal will be heard at a date to be fixed.
