Cooptado storms to Gold Cup victory

Won Premio Clasico Miguel Cane (G2), Palermo 1600.
Won Gran Premio Nacional (G1), San Isidro 2400m.

A Group 1 winner in his native Argentina and a listed winner in Dubai, COOPTADO broke through for his maiden win in Singapore in spectacular fashion when he captured the $1.35mil Longines Singapore Gold Cup at Kranji here today.

Ridden by the high-riding apprentice Shafiq Rizuan, the five-year-old came from a long way back in the early running to beat the joint favourite FASTNET DRAGON by a head with PERFECT P 2 3/4-length away third.

The other joint favourite, last year's winner QUECHUA, finished fifth.

The win was trainer Patrick Shaw's third in the 2200m handicap following his success with MR LINE in 2006 and QUECHUA last year.

For Shafiq, it was his first local Group 1 win in his best-ever season yet with already 53 wins in his bag. The Kelantan lad was the top apprentice in 2011 with 37 wins and is assured of another title this year.

COOPTADO made his Singapore debut in the Singapore Airlines International Cup last May, beating one home. But he made steady progress since, finishing on board in five starts including a fourth in the Derby and fourth in the El Dorado Classic last time out.

"He was not ready in the SIA Cup, but with more time, he’s slowly improved and never ran a bad race. I’ve been increasing his distances and the Gold Cup was always going to suit him," said Shaw.

"Though it was my first time riding this horse in a race, I rode him a few times in trackwork and I was confident he would run well," said Shafiq.
