Apprentice Saddam suspended three months

IPOH:  Aug 23, 2015

Apprentice Saddam Hussein Saari, who landed his first winner on ALL SERENE last month, has copped a three-month suspension.

Saddam was hauled up by the Stewards for his ride on THUNDER WIND in Class 4 - 1600m handicap here on Aug. The American entire, who was third choice in the betting in the 14-horse field, finished fifth to AFTER ME.

The Stewards concluded the inquiry into the running and handling of THUNDER WIND. Further evidence was taken from trainer Prakhash Pereira, the trainer of THUNDER WIND, Saddam, in the presence of his master, trainer Evert Van Breukelen and Dr Alistair Murdoch, Senior Veterinary Surgeon of the Perak Turf Club.

Saddam, in the presence of his master, pleaded guilty to a charge under MRA Rule 44(10) for failing to ride to the satisfaction of the Stewards in that he failed to ride THUNDER WIND with sufficient vigour and determination from approximately the 400m mark to the end of the race.

When deciding on penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Saddam’s guilty plea, mitigating factors and his riding record. Saddam was suspended from riding in races for a period of three months with effect from today to Nov 22, both dates inclusive. He was informed of his right of appeal.
