Promising Snitzel Spirit lands first group win

It was a big step-up in class but promising galloper SNITZEL SPIRIT took advantage of a big drop in the weights to win the S$150,00 Causeway Classic Stakes (1800m) on the polytrack at Kranji here tonight.

The Australian gelding had carried 59kg to win a Kranji Stakes C event two weeks ago but and was allotted 49.5kg for the set-weight event.

Corey Brown, who has been his regular rider since last November, had to shed a lot of weight to rider him at 51kg tonight and the sacrifice paid off when SNITZEL SPIRIT sat just outside of the pacemaker and took the lead at the home bend to win by three-quarter length.

"It was well worth it," said Brown of his wasting. "The horse had no weight on his back and had nothing to do really and when I let him roll and released him, he just kicked off the turn and was solid to the line."

It was the sixth win in 13 starts for SNITZEL SPIRIT who was purchased by trainer Michael Freedman for A$80,000 as a two-year-old.
