Conflight takes off in 3YO Sprint

Confidence Stable, who have won numerous big races in Malaysia with CONFIDENCE V and champion mare CONFLUENCE, captured their first feature race in Singapore when CONFLIGHT sprang a big surprise in the Group 3 Dester Singapore Three-Year-Old Sprint (1200m) at Kranji today.

And appropriately, it was Oscar Chavez, who won a Penang Gold Cup, Piala Emas Sultan Selagor, Selangor Gold Cup, Sprint Trophy and Coronation Cup with CONFLUENCE, who should be responsible for the stable's first black type win at Kranji.

Although CONFLIGHT won three of six starts and was placed second twice, he was unfancied in the betting probably as he has yet to be tested beyond 1100m and has thus far done his racing on the polytrack.

But any doubt about the Host gelding handling the turf and distance was answered in the most emphatic way when CONFLIGHT made all the running to win by half a length, beating the favourite MAGNUM. He paid $269 for a win.

"I had no doubt he was the quickest horse in the race. It was always the plan to go forward and ride him for luck in front," said Chavez who brought up a treble for the day with the win. "My only concern was that hard race he had at his last start and the grass which was a question mark. He did not pull up so well but his work has been good leading up to today’s race."
