Lim's Cruiser wins EW Barker Trophy

In his very first visit to Singapore, Mauritian jockey Karis Teetan landed the plumb of the night when he piloted LIM'S CRUISER to win the S$350,000 EW Barker Trophy at Kranji tonight.

Tetan and Joao Moreira were special envoys of the Hong Kong Jockey Club in the Hong Kong-themed programme which also featured the Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy.

Both also picked up rides in the Group 2 EW Barker Trophy with Moreira, who has cult following at Kranji before moving to Hong Kong, engaged on the favourite ALIBI and Teetan riding second-elect LIM'S CRUISER.

While ALIBI was given every chance by Moreira and could only finish a very close fifth, LIM'S CRUISER came from midfield to beat the front-running outsider JAY EFF EXPRESS by 1 1/4 lengths.

"I had a lot of confidence in this horse. He’s such a nice horse," said Teetan. "He gave me a good feeling in the run, but I was three or four metres off the rail in the back, and he was a bit keen. But luckily, he then dropped his head and came back underneath me."

LIM'S CRUISER, who cost only A$17,000 as a yearling, raced just once on New Zealand for a third in a Maiden event at Avondale but has shown potential in Singapore with four wins from seven starts.
