Good omen in Fujii's first win in 2016

Japanese jockey Kanichiro Fujii was off the mark in his second stint in Singapore when successful astride IN BOCCA AL LUPO in the Initiation, Div 2 - 1200m sprint on the polytrack at Kranji here today.

In his first stint back in 2007, after he had just finished his apprenticeship in Australia, Fujii rode 12 winners including TRIGGER EXPRESS in the Group 3 Chairman's Trophy.

His second stint, which is to last until the end of April, comes shortly after he spent three years in South Korea.

Fujii's victory on IN BOCCA AL LUPO was one for the Japanese.

The Japanese mare was purchased by his owner Masatsugu Otani and sent to trainer Hideyuki Takaoka in Singapore.

IN BOCCA AL LUPO started eight times last year without success but was coming to form, being placed in her last two starts.

Fujii kept the four-year-old just off the pace early before making her bid in the home stretch and went on to win by half a length.

"It’s great to get a winner in Singapore again," said Fujii. "This mare ran third at her last race and has always shown natural speed, but tends to die on her run. I was told to ride her a touch quieter today and she raced it off better."

The winner's name literally means the wolf’s mouth, but it actually signifies ‘good luck’ in Italian.
