Nova Warrior completes hattrick

NOVA WARRIOR scored a gallant victory in the Japan Racing Association Trophy at Kranji here today to complete a hattrick and brought his already impressive record to six wins from 12 starts.

Not bad for a horse who cost only NZ$11,000 as a yearling and began racing as a late three-year-old last year.

The Kranji Stakes C set-weight event today was a wide open betting race and despite winning his last two starts, NOVA WARRIOR started at a generous $36.

Shafiq Rizuan, who had partnered the New Zealand gelding in his last four wins, again had the mount but the pair had to stave off the late challenge of GHOST before winning by a neck in a race run in heavy downpour.

"This horse has all of a sudden hit top form and I told the owner there was no need to use an apprentice and we took a chance. Shafiq knows him best and he again did a great job," said trainer Alwin Tan.
