Amirul ends drought, then double up

Apprentice Amirul Ismadi ended a five-month drought when he scored on outsider APOLLO in the Class 5, Div 1 - 1400m handicap at Kranji here today.

Two races later, Amirul made it a double on LAUGHNG BUFFALO, achieving a 100 percent strike rate for the afternoon for both himself and trainer Cliff Crown.

APOLLO had not finished on board in 11 previous starts. He was well backed ($20) in a similar race last month but finished 10th.

This time around, the Australian gelding was able to charge home from a midfield position to win by half a length to pay $120 for a win.

LAUGHING BUFFALO was also a first-time winner in 10 starts. The New Zealand gelding found one to beat thrice last year and was placed in outings this year before finding the mark today. He paid $93.

"It’s been five months since my last win. I’ve been counting the days, and it’s a huge relief to finally win a race again,” said Amirul who rode 13 winners last year.

Amirul won two Perak Derbys on LITTLEBITOFJOY in 2015 and 2016, the second time for his father Ismadi Ismail — a former top jockey in the MRA circuit — before making the move south.
