Infantry powers to Kranji Mile win

INFANTRY masters COUNTOFMONTECRISTO to win the Panasonic

INFANTRY resumed racing after his Singapore Derby success back in July and immediately picked up where he left off winning the Panasonic Kranji Mile at Kranji here today.

Partnered by his Derby winning jockey Manoel Nunes, the Tavistock gelding was always well in touch with the leaders, coming from fifth at the home turn to win by half a length from COUNTOFMONTECRISTO. Last year's winner Debt Collector was third this time.

It was the 10th win in 22 starts for INFANTRY who had cost just NZ$7,000 as a weanling and brought his earning to just over A$1.8mil.

"This horse has such a big heart. Back on the 1600m after the Derby, I put the blinkers back on to sharpen him up a little, said trainer Alwin Tan. "We didn’t want to force him, we didn’t want him to go too hard to the front and it’s paid off.”

"He’s a very good horse and can run any distance from 1200m to 1800m," said jockey Nunes. "Today was a very big test for him, especially as he was coming back from the Derby."
