Saimee Jumaat saddles first winner

Six weeks after embarking on a new chapter in his career, former MRA and Singapore champion jockey Saimee Jumaat finally saddled his first winner when SHOQEET came from behind to win the Open Maiden, Div 2 - 1200m sprint on the polytrack at Kranji here today.

On hand to help him achieve this milestone with his 23rd runner was none other than jockey Oscar Chavez who shared intense rivalry with Saimee when the latter was collecting 1,355 winners in the saddle.

SHOQEET, who was a first-up fourth in Restricted Terms last month, came from a long way back in the early running to win drawing away by 2 1/4 lengths.

"The expectations have been so great, especially with my record as a jockey. To be honest, it’s more of a relief I’ve finally got my first winner as a trainer," said Saimee.

"Now that first winner is out of the way, I think the winners should be able to follow up now. The horses are racing well and there is no reason why the others won’t follow suit."

"Saimee was one of the best jockeys in Singapore and he’s now trained his first winner. I’m just so proud to be part of that," said Chavez.
