Mertens lands first Kranji win on Molineux

Visiting Melbourne jockey Beau Mertens, 21, ended his two-day stint with a win astride MOLINEUX in the Class 4 - 1600m handicap at Kranji here today.

The son of former jockey Peter Mertens settled the son of Savabeel in the rear bunch before working his way to the front in the home stretch to win by 1 1/2 lengths.

It was the maiden win six starts for MOLINEUX who was purchased by his connections for NZ$125,000 as a yearling.

"I'm pretty rapt I got my first winner in Singapore today," said Mertens who was second to Craig Williams in the Melbourne premiership in the 2016/17 season while still an apprentice. "I was just learning my way around on Friday, and came close a couple of times."

Mertens, however, will have to serve a two-day suspension after being charged for careless riding on AUTUMN RUSH in a later race.
