Amistad gives trainer Young maiden win

Trainer Young Keah Yong, who started out in July last year, finally saddled his winner when AMISTAD scored a narrow win in the Class 5 - 1200m handicap at Kranji here today.

Apprentice Shafrizal Salleh, who relocated to Singapore last year, had scored once on the gelding when he was trained by Michael Clements.

Today's outing was AMISTAD's third for Young and the trainer's 65th runner since his debut.

AMISTAD took command on settling and was looking to lead all the way as did his last win.

But the gelding drifted out from the fence after the home bend, allowing PRINCE FERDINAND to sneak up on his inside. AMISTAD was headed at one stage but fought back close to home to win by a head.

"It’s a great day for me, but at the same time it’s nothing to shout about as we still have to continue working hard," said the 39-year-old trainer who started out as a syce with Charles Leck in 2001.

"Hopefully, things will go better for me this year. I have 25 horses in work and am still in the process of building up my stable. There are more horses on the way in months to come."
