Webster stages surprise comeback win

WEBSTER returned to racing to cause a huge upset in the Kranji Stakes B event over 1100m at Kranji here today.

A knee operation caused him to sit out the last eight months but the New Zealand gelding showed that he is back in the pink of health, coming from just off the pace to win by half a length.

WEBSTER had won four times in 11 starts before his enforced spell and many doubted his fitness which saw him started the race at $182.

"Credit to my staff for that win. This horse just came back from a knee operation," said trainer Daniel Meagher. "I thought he was not fully ready today, but Chin rode him perfect. He gave him a beautiful economical run, gave him no pressure at all during the race."

"It’s also great for Chin as it’s his first win as a senior jockey," said Meagher.

Chin Chee Seng had partnered WEBSTER to victory last April when still an apprentice. He has been granted a full jockey licence this year. "This horse runs well fresh-up, but I still didn’t expect him to win," he said.
