Wind Trail too strong in comeback win

After managing just one placing last year, WIND TRAIL swung back to form to win the Kranji Stakes C event over 1800m at Kranji here today.

The Japanese gelding had shown a return to form in his first two starts this season with placings over 1800m and 2000m in Class 4.

The six-year-old got it right this time. After settling down in midfield, jockey Mark Lerner found a split between horses at the of of the straight. WIND TRAIL quickly opened up in fine style to snatch the lead at the 200m, then held off late challengers to win by 1 1/4 lengths.

It was his fourth win in 19 starts at Kranji. WIND TRAIL came to Singapore as a maiden, being unplaced in seven starts at two and three in Japan.

"Marc Lerner rode Wind Trail very well. He knows the horse well," said the trainer Hideyuki Hakaoka. "You saw how he started to look around and stop when he hit the front. He even started to hang out.

"Another 50m, he would have lost the race. He’s a horse who cannot go to the front too soon, but at the same time, if you leave it too late, he may not have the same burst."
