Lim's Lightning strikes gold in Kranji Mile

LIM'S LIGHTNING bounced back from a disappointing seasonal debut last month to capture the Kranji Mile over 1600m at Kranji here today.

The Australian gelding was clearly in need of a run when he trailed home sixth to GOLD STAR over 1400m last month after being out of action since last November.

But he was back to his best when he not only bagged his fourth Group 1 win, but also rewrote the course record with a time of 1min. 33.25secs, slicing 0.03 second off the previous mark set by MAGNETO in 2014.

LIM'S LIGHTNING won four races in 2018 including the Group 2 Aushorse Golden Horseshoe before leaving for Australia the following year where he picked up one win.

Returning to Singapore, LIM'S LIGHTNING has proven to be better than ever before with six wins last year, winning the Lion City Cup, Raffles Cup and the Singapore Gold Cup.

His only defeat in 2021 was when narrowly beaten by MINISTER in the Kranji Mile.

For winning jockey Wong Chin Chuen, it was his first Group 1 success.

"That feeling I can’t explain," said Wong. "He was travelling very well in the race but I was a bit surprised when he pulled away to a big gap.

"It was an amazing feeling past the post. It’s my first group win, a big thanks to the owners, all the connections, and I don’t know what to say, (but it’s) my first Group 1 in Singapore!"

For trainer Daniel Meagher, it was a mixed feeling. Lim's Stable and Meagher also had the favourite LIM'S KOSCIUSZKO in the race but the eight-time winner faded to finish tenth after leading into the straight.
