Minister gets into Cup picture with comeback

SINGAPORE: Nov 5, 2022

MINISTER bounced back to form just in time to put himself in the picture for the Singapore Gold Cup in two weeks' time.

It was his first win since defeating LIM'S LIGHTNING to take the Kranji Mile last year. LIM'S LIGHTNING went on to bag the Gold Cup while MINSITER was never a factor in the 2000m handicap.

MINISTER ran his best race for a while when third to PROSPEROUS RETURN in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup last month and stepped up on that effort to win the Class 2 - 1600m handicap at Kranji here today.

Ridden by Matthew Kellady, the American gelding settled off the pace in third or fourth spot and took quite a while to get going in the straight. IN ALL HIS GLORY was the runaway leader at the 200m MINISTER and OCEAN CROSSING went after him and fought stride-for-stride to the post in the final 100m.

OCEAN CROSSING was momentarily in front at the one stage but MINISTER back fight and surged in front close home to win by half a length.

"He’s (MINISTER) really stepped up of late," said trainer Donna Logan.

"He’s really well in himself. I put him in today because I think he needed the run going into the (Singapore Gold) Cup and he’s a very difficult horse to work."

Kellady, who will ride MINISTER in the Gold Cup, said: "He’s a funny old horse. He has a mind of his own and he races where he wants to.

"I rode him at his last start and he ran very well for me and that’s why Donna decided to put me back on him."
