Relau Star regains shine with mild upset

After being out of the limelight for more than a year, RELAU STAR was back to dazzle when he captured the Enrich Stakes A event over 1400m here today.

The son of Captain Sonador has won 10 races since making his debut in 2017 but his last success came a week to the day here last year.

Up against last-start winners CHINA CAPTAIN, GRAND CHOICE (gunning for a hattrick) and DIRECTOR, the eight-year-old appeared to have his work cut out for him today.

But jockey Saddam Hussein Saari, who had ridden RELAU STAR in his last three wins, knew the horse well.

The pair settled well off the pace. Just when GRAND CHOICE hit the front in the home with DIRECTOR chasing him on the outside, Saddam took the inside run on RELAU STAR.

They slowly but surely cut down the two leaders in the final 200m and went on to win by 1 1/4 lengths.

RELAU STAR was purchased by Wong Kong Fatt for just A$25,000 as an unraced two-year-old and the Australian gelding has rewarded his trainer with 11 wins.
