Akhtar bounces back with runaway win

AKHTAR recovered from the worst run of his Singapore campaign thus far last time out to score a runaway win in the Class 4 - 1000m sprint on the polytrack at Kranji here today.

The Australian entire, who had a win and a third in seven runs in Sydney, won his Singapore debut last July and was placed in three subsequent runs in Class 3.

A last-start sixth two weeks ago saw him back in Class 4 and the five-year-old seized the drop in class to trash his rivals by three and a quarter lengths to conclude a superb afternoon for both rider Bruno Queiroz and trainer Jason Ong.

Both had combined to score on HEALTHY BABY and TOP FIELD earlier in the day.

Queiroz also scored on LONHRO GOLD much earlier.

Ong also consolidated his position at the top of the table with an early double with DRAGON MASTER and WAR STAR. It was the Singaporean's first five-timer in his best-ever season yet.

"My first five-timer – I don’t know what to say," said Ong who now leads the 2023 trainer’s premiership on 52 wins for the season.

"Everything came together. It’s a team effort, from the stable boys to the farriers to the riders. Everyone put in (the effort) and it added up to today’s results.

"Two of my winners today – Top Field and Dragon Master – had issues with their feet, so the team of farriers – Jessen (Dennison), Paul (Summers) and Chris (Matts) all contributed.

"And the jockeys – Bruno and Manoel (Nunes) – gave so much feedback on my horses."
