The August romps to first win in Class 1

THE AUGUST stepped up on his fourth in the Group 3 Kranji Sprint three weeks ago to win the Class 1 - 1200m sprint on the polytrack at Kranji here today.

The son of I Am Invincible tried to make all the running in the Kranji Sprint but was caught close to home to finish just over a length from the winner MR MALEK.

This time, however, there was no catching the seven-year-old who led from start to finish to win by 2 1/4 lengths. It was his sixth win in 36 starts in Singapore, and the first since scoring back-to-back double in Class 3 in mid season last year.

THE AUGUST was unbeaten in two runs at two in Australia and was placed in four of nine starts at three, including a second in the Group 3 HDF McNiel Stakes at Caulfield.

"It was a winnable race at the handicaps," said trainer Jerome Tan. THE AUGUST carried 54kg.

"But he needed things to go his way. He went close before in this type of race but either had bad gates or found trouble.

"I was also worried about the polytrack at this level as I thought that he was better on the turf.

Tan said THE AUGUST went to hard in the Kranji Sprint and he had expected LUCKY JINSHA to lead today but the latter missed the jump.
