With five horses withdrawn (all trained by Michael Clements) on race day, 11 horses were left to face the starter in the Singapore Three-Year-Old Sprint (1200m) at Kranji here today.

Under the revised make-up of the race, trainer Donna Logan's three runners filled three of the top four positions. However but it was the third choice of the trio in the betting, JANUARY, who came up victorious in the Group 3 race.

JANUARY scored back-to-back wins over 1400m in Restricted Maiden and Novice company at the tailend of last season and was placed in his three runs this year in the lead up to today's contest.

On settling down, the 11 horses were split into two packs with several lengths separating the two groups in the back straight. JANUARY led the second group.

The field bunched up making the turn into the straight and JANUARY was within striking distance on the inside of runners.

Jockey Simon Kok eased JANUARY out behind the leaders to get a clear run at the top of the straight. The pacemaker BABY TWINS shortened strides rapidly at the 200m. The favourite BESTSELLER, who was given a charm of a run by Manoel Nunes, quickly pounced on his outside with JANUARY joining in the fray.

JANUARY and BESTSELLER then drew away to fight out the finish, with the former winning by a head.

"I said pre-race that the jockey who gave the best ride would win," said trainer Logan who also trains LUXURY BRAND and KNIPPENBERG, third and fourth respectively.

"Simon rode him a treat. I pictured him three-back on the fence and emphasised that the best way home was the shortest route. You can’t win Group races going wide in Singapore.

"It worked out beautifully. The rain helped – Simon said the runners out front were struggling on the shifting track – and when he hit the front at the furlong, I knew he wouldn’t get beat."

Logan bought JANUARY for NZ$75,000 at the Ready To Run sale and the gelding now has three wins and five placings in eight starts.
