Cavalry charges home for comeback win

CAVALRY returned to form to win the Class 2 - 1600m at Kranji here today to earn a crack at the Kranji Mile coming up in two weeks' time.

MAKIN, who had a hattrick earlier in the year, started $8 favourite in the main event today but it was stablemate CAVALRY who charged home best to win by a neck.

CAVALRY won three races including the listed Tattersalls Life Member Stakes at Eagle Farm and the listed Geelong Classic, and was placed six times in 19 starts in three seasons in Australia.

The son of Tavistock made a winning Singapore debut last July before finishing second to GOLDEN MONKEY in the Derby.

CAVALRY bled when he beat one home in his next start and was spelled.

The New Zealand gelding resumed last Mar 30 with a fourth-place finish to MAKIN over 1600m.

He turned the tables today when he came from well back in the running to win with a late surge from RAISING SIXTY-ONE. After taking the lead in the home straight, MAKIN faded to finish third.

"They both ran really well," said trainer Steven Burridge.

"I can’t be disappointed with MKIN. It was not the jockey’s (Manoel Nunes) fault but he was a sitting duck when the leaders stopped so quickly.

"Although MAKIN did the work to lead up the rest of the field, the race suited CAVALRY who had a last crack at them, so I can’t complain."

"This horse (CAVALRY) hasn’t raced much lately, so to win today was very good," said winning jocjey Ruan Maia who has been booked for the Kranji Mile.
