Red Maned gets Kok off the mark

A lucky pick-up ride on RED MANED landed Simon Kok his first win since returning to ride in Singapore last month.

Kok took two months off for his wedding and subsequent honeymoon at the end of last season. He also rode in France before getting a call-up to return.

RED MANED had won just once in 23 previous starts and were to be ridden by Darren Danis but he was indisposed for the day.

Kok did not wasted the opportunity. He jumped RED MANED smartly from his wide barrier and was the early leader.

But Kok allowed WAR WARRIOR to lead on settling down on his inside but kept pace with the leader.

RED MANED shot to the front at the 200m but laid about in the run home and Kok had to straighten him. Eventually, RED MANED kept his mind on the job and went strongly to the line to win by one length.

"I expected (the wait for the win) with the current situation, but I’ve been fortunate to have support every week and I’m lucky to get a winner today," said Kok.

"He (RED MANED) bounced out good from the gate. He was actually the first one out.

"We had to work it out from the wide barrier but the horse from inside (WAR WRRRIOR) took him into the race nicely.

"I relaxed him and coming to the 500m, he kept on going. I was a bit worried at the last 200m because the horse on the outside (SACRED GOLD) got closer.

"But I kept riding him hands and heels and he ran to the line rather nicely."
