Golden Monkey lands Fortune Bowl

It's two rides and two group wins for Chad Schofield on GOLDEN MONKEY whose trainer Tim Fitzsimmons thinks is "probably the second best horse in the country" (next to LIM'S KOSCIUSZKO).

Schofield flew in for a one-day flying visit last July and won the Group 2 Stewards' Cup on GOLDEN MONKEY.

Back for a second time, Schofield pulled it off again to land the Group 3 Fortune Bowl on the Star Turn gelding who also won the Singapore Derby (ridden by Hugh Bowman) last year.

Schofield had GOLDEN MONKEY parked sixth on the rails in the 16-strong field. Coming to the straight, the pair had to wait for an opening behind FAME STAR, who led from the start, STREET OF DREAMS and SILENT IS GOLD.

GOLDEN MONKEY got the split approaching the 200m when STREET OF DREAMS had dashed clear. But GOLDEN MONKEY quickly wore him down to win by 1 1/4 lengths.

"I was pretty confident," said Fitzsimmons. "His (GOLDEN MONKEY) first-up run (beaten a neck by SILENT IS GOLD on January 20) was massive with 59kg and we were really confident he would run well today.

"He was always going to need luck because he was going to be in midfield and there’s a lot of traffic in front of him.

"But he (Schofield) rode him perfectly. That’s why we fly him in as he’s just world-class."

"I had a lot of horse underneath me," said Schofield.

"It’s well known now that the horse enjoys being ridden that way (quiet), so although we had a good draw, we just wanted to keep everything the same with him.

"He’s got a really good turn of foot and he was the class horse in that race; hence why he carried the weight.

"We had a lovely run, but the horse still had the turn of foot when I needed it too."
