Shortly after entering the front straight, EMPIRE BAY was disappointed for a run to the inside of GYPSY (R Olechea) when GYPSY rolled in marginally and as a result, shifted out over the heels of GYPSY to gain a clear run.

The Stewards questioned App S Zulfikri, in the presence of his master, Trainer PS Kumaran, into the tactics that were adopted on JUST VITAL in the home straight in particular over the final 300m where in the opinion of the Stewards, the manner in which App S Zulfikri was striking his horse was unacceptable and doubtful whether he was making any contact.

App S Zulfikri stated that he was using extra length whip and although it seems like he may not be striking it, in his opinion it was making contact.

Trainer PS Kumaran agreed with both observations. The Stewards, after viewing the official patrol film and acting on their own observations, gave him the "benefit of the doubt" and warned App S Zulfikri in the strongest terms that this type of riding would not be condoned by the Stewards in future and would be monitored in future.

The Stewards questioned Jockey M Wepner, the rider of STREET OF LONDON, Jockey J De Souza, the rider of FLIGHT OF THE SAKER and Jockey S Ruzaini, the rider of TRUSON into the reasons why STREET OF LONDON was severely checked at approximately the 1200m and lost its rightful position. The Stewards adjourned an inquiry into App P Deneskumar’s ride on FRANKLY MY DEAR as Trainer L Moy had left the course.

The Stewards questioned Trainer D Murphy and Jockey R Olechea into the tactics that were adopted on POLYGRAPH and into the reasons why Jockey R Olechea failed to show sufficient vigour as expected in particular from the 700m to the 300m.

Jockey R Olechea stated that he was instructed by the Trainer that POLYGRAPH may not be able to run a 1600M and try to endeavour to give the mare a midfield breather as she may be suspect to run out the 1600M. He further stated that he placed the mare under pressure at the 300M and failed to respond to his riding.

Trainer D Murphy agreed with his Jockey’s explanation, however, the Stewards, after viewing the official patrol film and acting on their own observations, warned Jockey R Olechea in the strongest term that at all stages throughout the race, he should ensure that he rides with vigour that is acceptable by the Stewards. As a result of this incident, GHOST STREET (App S Shafrizal), PISCES STAR (App SU Lim) and CALIFORNIA CAT (M Ganeesh) were all checked as a consequence.

In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey R Olechea’s guilty plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. The Stewards questioned Trainer D Murphy and App KC Wong into the tactics that would be adopted on AGELESS in today’s event. The Stewards had noticed that today’s instructions were to be forward in this race where this is contrary to its previous racing pattern where the horse got back in its races.

Trainer D Murphy explained that it was his decision to change the tactics as the horse had previously won in Singapore when it was ridden forward in its races and he further stated that he removed the blinkers as he believed that they may be detrimental to its chances today.
