Shayne Cahill fails in appeals

KUALA LUMPUR,  21 June 2003

Australian jockey Shayne Cahill has been banned from racing for four years after he failed in his two appeals against disqualification.

Cahill was disqualified one year over his handling of KIM MUSIC in a Class 4, Div 4 - 1,400m sprint at Sungei Besi on 30 March 2003.

In that race, the Sennett Ho-trained KIM MUSIC (5 b/br.a.m Serheed - Music Role by Beau Sovereign) came from the rear to half-a-length finish second to ZAP N LARI.

Jockey Cahill was charged with a contravention of MRA Rule 144(2) which is punishable under MRA Rule 144(5) in that he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure that KIM MUSIC was given a full opportunity to win.

The details of the charges are as follows:

1. That he took hold of his mount at the start resulting in it being placed towards the rear of the field where it could not race to its best advantage.

2. From between the 400m and 200m mark approximately, at a vital stage of the race, he sat quietly behind other runners.

3. Over the final 200 he failed to ride with sufficient vigour and determination and stopped riding in the concluding stages when his mount was running on strongly.

A week later on 6 April 2003, Cahill was disqualified three years and fined RM50,000 over his handling of JAKISHA in a Maiden, Div 2 - 1,400m sprint also at Sungei Besi.

In that race, the four-year-old grey New Zealand gelding by Danasinga out of Irish Gift (by Shannon) came from last at the home turn to finish second to PURPLE TOGOGIGO.

Cahill was charged with a contravention of MRA Rule 144 (2) which is punishable under MRA Rule 144 (5) in that he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure that the horse JAKISHA was given full opportunity of winning.

The details of the charge are as follows:

1. That having lost his off-side stirrup iron soon after the start, he made no serious attempt to regain its use. During this time, he continually restrained his mount to the back of the field until approximately the 1000m, where it could not race to its best advantage.

2. After entering the home straight in last position, he failed to ride it with sufficient vigour and determination from about 300m to the finish when his mount was running on strongly.

The Racing Stewards of the Selangor Turf Club dismissed the two appeals today and ordered his deposits forfeited.

They also ordered that the one-year disqualification to commence effective 4 April 2003 and the three-year disqualification to commence upon the expiry of the one-year disqualification.
