Readings of turf and fibresand tracks

SINGAPORE,  24 January 2003

To provide racegoers with a more accurate gauge of the ‘going’ of the racetracks, the Club will be displaying track-meter readings of the Turf and Fibresand tracks over the close circuit televisions on racedays from tomorrow.

Turf-Meter Readings

The Turf-Meter (also known as the penetrometer) measures the firmness of the turf track by dropping a weight onto a penetrating tip which in turn is driven into the ground. The deeper the tip sinks into the ground, the softer the track, while the less it sinks into the ground, the firmer the track.

The chart below shows the range of readings of the Turf-Meter and the going of the track:

Turf-Meter Reading Track Condition
0 - 4.5 Firm
4.6 - 5.0 Good
5.1 - 5.5 Yielding
5.6 - 6.0 Soft
6.1 and upwards Heavy
Sand -Meter Readings

The Sand-Meter (also known as the Clegg Hammer) measures the condition of the Fibresand track by dropping a weight onto the track. The softer the impact, the softer the track. The harder the impact, the firmer and faster the track.

The chart below shows the range of Sand-Meter readings and the going on the Fibresand track:

Sand-Meter Reading Track Condition
111 and above Firm
71 - 110 Good
51 - 70 Yielding
0 - 50 Soft
With the Track-meter readings, racegoers will have more information to help them pick winners at the races.
