BABY STAR, winner of the RM150,000 Anniversary
Cup last week, made it a big race double when he scored a fighting win in
the RM1.35 million Yang Di Pertua Negeri Gold Cup over 2,200m here today.
The six-year-old chestnut New Zealand gelding by Deputy Governor out of the Kaapstad mare Kaapture The Heart became the first horse to complete the Anniversary Cup-Gold Cup double and the latest addition to the equine millionaires club. His win today - his eighth from 34 starts - brought BABY STAR’s earnings to RM1,467,341, a splendid return for the NZ$40,000 paid for him at the 2000 New Zealand Ready To Run sale. It was the biggest win for 66-year-old Mohd Zafir, who during the week was given a trainer’s licence for the final year in 2005. The win also provided jockey Martin Wepner with a grand send-off, the South African leaving the local circuit after five years and riding on a MRA expatriate licence this season. BABY STAR’s most important win to date also avenged his defeat to SOLO VENTURE (6 b.a.g Flying Sour - Hermitage Lane by Balmerino) in the Astro Wah Lai Toi Charity Cup two starts back, winning by a head this time. Former Singapore galloper ROYAL CAPTAIN (4 br.nz.g Carolingian - Vicki Deming by Long Row) finished third in his first start in Malaysia, after chalking up three wins in nine starts at Kranji. |
