Bonny Ng goes on six-month leave

PENANG,  23 July 2004

Penang based trainer Bonny Ng is taking a six-month leave from next week which has been granted by the Malayan Racing Association.

This comes after the brother of retired trainer Robert Ng is left with only a handful of horses. He has saddled only two winners thus far this year.

The 49-year-old’s decision to go on leave may come as a surprise to many. Only two seasons ago, Ng was among the leading contenders for the Malaysia trainer’s premiership.

That year, Ng finished second to Ipoh-based James Brogan, saddling 35 winners to the latter’s 46 winners. He also saddled OPPOSING FORCE to win his second consecutive Perak Derby and STRENGTH ‘N HONOUR in the Selangor Gold Cup.

OPPOSING FORCE also won the MRA Cup for Ng in 2001.

Meanwhile, the Perak Turf Club has granted 35 stables to former West Australian trainer John McGillivray.

*Footnote: Three trainers who took leave previously have not returned to the racing scene. They were Singapore based Michael Ho, Kuala Lumpur based Jonathan Ho and Penang based Joseph Phun.
