Top Weight for Handicap Races

From 1 January 2005, the weights for handicap races (Class and Benchmark) except for Feature races held under handicap conditions will be allocated using the following guidelines.

Rating Spread of horses in handicaps (excluding Emergency Acceptors) Allocation Method
14 point and below 57kg downwards
15 points to 18 points 50kg upwards
19 point and above 59kg downwards
  • The top weight will not be more than 59kg
  • The allocation of weights for Feature races held under Handicap conditions will be at the discretion of the Handicappers subject to the maximum topweight of 60kg.

With the introduction of these guidelines, the published benchmark in Benchmark races will no longer be pegged to a weight as was the practice. The published benchmark will serve as an entry point for the Benchmark races.

Also, from 1 January 2005 Benchmark Races will be open to horses up to a maximum of 2 points above the designated published benchmark only.

These revisions are aimed at reducing the weights that horses have to carry in the races as well as reducing the number of horses racing outside the handicap (i.e underscaled).
