DREYFUSS

DREYFUSS, who came to Singapore unraced, defeated two overseas Group winners to capture the S$800,000 Emirates Singapore Derby over 2,000m at Kranji here today in what was very much a Laurie Laxon show.

The Kiwi trainer not only provided the first three place-getters in the Singapore Group 1 classic for four-year-olds, he also provided the winners of half the card of ten races.

DREYFUSS has always shown that he has the potential. After a second in his debut, the four-year-old bay New Zealand gelding by Oregon out of the Siege Perilous mare My Amazing Grace won four consecutive races last year, then ran a terrific third to ZIRNA in the Singapore Gold Cup.

DREYFUSS won the Patrons’ Bowl (1,400m) and was third to SUPERIOR STAR in the Derby Trial (1,600m), the two lead-up races to the Singapore Derby. (The Bowl, the Trail and the Derby form the Singapore four-year-old challenge series.)

Ridden by Shane Dye, DREYFUSS turned the tables on the Group 2 Western Australian Oaks winner SUPERIOR STAR (4 b.a.m Nothin’ Leica Dane - Musters by Pasakos) to win by three quarters of a length to earn a $50,000 bonus for winning two legs of the series.

RAUDKIVI (4 ch.a.g Spinning World - Altrista by Sir Tristram) was a surprise third, ahead of SURVEYOR (4 chsafg Western Winter - Crescent Fields by Northfields), a multiple Group 1 winner in South Africa, Group 3 winner in Dubai and second to EPALO in the Singapore Airlines International Cup.

Grey Childs, who flew in from Melbourne last night to ride SUPERIOR STAR, did not go home empty handed as he scored on GOOD BENEFIT (6 br.a.m Is It True - Banners Flying by Century) for Laxon a race earlier.

Champion New Zealand apprentice Jason Waddell began his three-month stint in Singapore with a "bang" when he scored on his first ride on TIMBERTOP (3 b.a.g Woodman - Dikara by Bluebird), trained by his Singapore master Laxon, in the opening race.

Laxon went on to win the two races FRANSHOEK (3 ch.nz.g Mellifont - Sugar Cookie by New Regent) and DRAGON MASTER (5 b.nz.g Masterclass - Dawn March by Battle-Waggon) respectively.
