Penang is turning out to be a lucky
destination for Perth jockey Alana Sansom.
Two years ago, the former top apprentice triumphed in the RM300,000 Malaysian Magic Millions Classic in her first visit to Malaysia. On her return visit this time, Sansom has captured another big race - the RM300,000 MRA Cup, which this year was run over 1,700m at Penang today. Partnering the K L Chong-trained GREG IS GREAT, Sansom kept the six-year-old bay Australian gelding by Pricelessly out of the Cheraw mare Speech Of Praise well back in the early, then swept around the field at the home turn to win drawing away by one-and-a-half lengths. Sansom had to survive an objection by Oscar Chavez, the rider of the second placed XTHEREST, before being confirmed the winner. BABE CLASSIC’s third placing ended his run of five consecutive wins. In winning, GREG IS GREAT became the first horse to score back-to-back win in the MRA Cup, which is staged on rotation among the four turf clubs in the Malaysia-Singapore circuit. Last year, GREG IS GREAT won the Cup when it was staged over 1,800m at Ipoh. Chavez, however, had the consolation of winning two more races today, adding to the three he won yesterday. Chavez handed punters a shock when he scored on BUSINESS BOSS (4 b.a.g Key Business - Chanterelle by Zemindar) in the Class 5, Div 4 - 1,200m sprint. He then went on to win on DANE MARK in the Class 5, Div 4 - 1,700m handicap. |
