MRA licences for Vorster and Wilkinson

PENANG,  13 December 2004

South African Barend Vorster, who is assured of the 2004 Singapore Jockeys’ Premiership, has been granted a Malayan Racing Association (MRA) expatriate jockey’s licence for the 2005 racing season.

Vorster rode on a local permit issued by the Singapore Turf Club during the early part of the current season and as a expatriate jockey from mid-October.

He leads the table with 52 winners with just one more racing day (this Friday) to go and is seven ahead of Australian Craig Carmody.

Coincidently, Carmody who took over from compatriot Eddie Wilkinson as the stable rider to trainer Don Baertschiger, will be "replaced" by his fellow countryman for the new year.

Midway this season, Wilkinson was granted a three-month permit to stand in for the injured Carmody and chalked up 11 wins, including the Queen Elizabeth II Cup astride MOON SHADOW and the Patrons' Bowl on DREYFUSS.

Vorster, sponsored by Zimbabwean trainer Michael Clements, and Wilkinson are the only two granted expatriate licences for 2005.
