Mark Zahra, who during the week was granted a
six-month extension to his current three-month riding permit which expires
on October 19, celebrated the news with an upset win on MAYO’S MUSIC in
the S$350,000 Raffles Cup over 1,800m at Kranji here today.
The Melbourne Cup jockey has only ridden six winners prior to today but there is no doubt as to his ability as he guided the seven-year-old bay Australian gelding by Procol Harum out of Mayo Million (by Royal Troubador) to a half-length win over the Laurie Laxon trained SUPERIOR STAR, the only mare in the line-up. The other two Laxon runners RAUL and the favourite DREYFUSS finished third and fourth respectively. It was the first time the John Meagher trained MAYO’S MUSIC, winner of the Kranji Mile last April, has been tested beyond 1,600m. Apart from the one-off Hibiscus Bowl (1,200m) in May last year, this was also MAYO’S MUSIC’s first attempt in a Singapore Group 1 event. MAYO’S MUSIC came to Singapore with a record of four wins from 16 starts over two seasons in Brisbane and Sydney and has now chalked up six wins and 20 placings from 40 outings in Singapore, earning S$900,000 in prizemoney. |
