Selangor registers healthy growth

KUALA LUMPUR,  18 June 2004

On the back of news that the club recorded healthy growth in betting turnover and attendance in 2003, the Selangor Turf Club (SLTC) has announced that they will stage their first International Invitation Cup in September next year.

At the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, Tunku Dato Seri Shahabuddin, who was re-elected chairman, said that the betting turnover registered an increase of 9 percent from RM240 million in 2002 to RM262 million in 2003.

"Day members attendance showed a steady growth of 14 percent or 82,387 from 573,201 in 2002 to 655,688 in 2003," said Tunku Shahabuddin.

On the international invitation race, he said that the RM2 million race will be a handicap event for three-year-olds and upwards and strictly for horses which have not won an international Group 1 or Group 2 race.

It was expected that horses from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, India, Australia and New Zealand will be invited for the 1,600m event.

At the AGM, Tunku Shahabuddin also said that the SLTC is progressing on the relocation exercise to Sungai Tinggi following the endorsement of the ordinary members at the Emergency General Meeting in March.
