Peter Clarke disqualified one year

KUALA LUMPUR,  13 January 2005

Trainer Peter Clarke has been disqualified one year under MRA Rule 203(b) but has been granted a stay of execution on application.

The Sungei Besi based Australian trainer was charged in that he, a trainer licenced by the MRA, presented MONKEY SMILE to race in Race 11 at the Selangor Turf Club (SLTC) on December 12, where MONKEY SMILE was subjected to an examination under MRA Rule 201(1)(ii) in which it failed its pre-race examination when the gelding showed the presence of a substance which in the opinion of the Stipendiary Stewards was markedly abnormal and not explainable by natural process.

Evidence was taken from Clarke, track rider Azian Abdul Manap, syce Fadzari Ahmad and Dr Elizabeth Tee, a veterinary surgeon at the SLTC.

SLTC senior veterinary surgeon Dr Shri Kanth and Professor Tan Soo Choon, chief Analyst of the USM veterinary forensic laboratory assisted the inquiry.

Clarke subsequently appealed against the decision of the stewards and applied for a stay of sentence which was later granted after considering his submissions.
